Waves crashed vigorously against the thin beaches and craggy rocks of the Island of Hoole, but they soon were vanquished by the islands natural defences. The great tree in the centre was sure to be never harmed by the thrashing waves, no matter how violent they became. Approaching the tree, you would easily notice the small cluster of shapes on a grassy area of land that ended with a cliff. The figures were crowded around a large owl who was trying to get them into an orderly bunch.
"Settle down, settle down! I know it's exciting when we leave the Island, but please just settle down!" Ryb Leonidas hooted loudly, failing to silence the students. If you knew what Chaw he taught, you would recognise their eager faces to belong to the Search-and-rescue class. They all had very strong gizzards, being double-tapped into battle, there was no doubt they were tough. Hooting again, Leonidas, flapped his wings about shepherding the smaller owls into a line. Finally, when they were all settled, he began to speak again:
"For a bunch of owls who were woken before deep Grey, you are all so active! Settle down, you two! Ahem... Today, we venture out of the tree to a land called Silverveil. Some of you may be familiar with it, it may be your home, or you may have no idea where it is. No matter, we are going to do an exercise there today. I hope you have all eaten." Now that the great-grey had settled, you could see his features. He was large, just like his species, with grey and white feathers. It was clear he had experienced much in his life as he had a long, wide scar across his left eye which can sometimes scare a young owl, perfect for teaching. Clearing his throat, he spoke once again, listing all the names of his chaw: "Right, roll-call. Hoot when I say your names, please. Sindari? Lupinus? Tobias? Masq?" He paused after every name, looking for the owl and then continuing when he heard their call. It was a reasonably big chaw to take out, but he had asked a few full-guardians to tag along like Sindari. After roll-call, he stood surveying the group, his eyes resting on Masq curiously.
Ever since that owl had been put in his chaw... he felt something strange about the boy. Was it the aura of bravery? Or of treachery? With the remnants rising, the Guardians could afford no stupidity. Quickly glancing away, he called for the full-guardians to surround the group ready for take off.
(note: all search and rescue chaw members need to join this thread as it is their chaw, thanks )

She was jittery, of all things. Why? Well, Sindari couldn't quite tell herself why. Of all the most stupidest things... She shook her head a little, amused at herself. Hehe. It was weird, but, she liked it. It confused her a little, but hey, most things could confuse Sindari. Like how she could barely take her mind off of Arctus... Now that really was a mystery to her, and it was probably a mystery to other owls as well. Yes, she liked him, but her thoughts were always on him, which was unnerving. She shouldn't be concentrating on their king; she had to concentrate on her chaw and battling and searching and rescuing. It might endanger other owls if she only thought about Arctus. She sighed, yellow eyes looking around at the other owls. Leonidas looked unamused.
She pulled herself from those thoughts as he did roll call. "Present," the female said, ruffling up her feathers a little. She looked at the other owls; there wasn't very many here, and she felt like she was the only full guardian there (which, obviously, she wasn't). She shook her head, a little more vigoursly this time, and waited for the word.
muse booster; to the sky, owl city. words; there are some words derp. tag; masq/open weather; misty, miserable. notes; pffffft. this is fail so very much. >>

His dark eyes hid every emotion that took hold of him. Masq watched his ryb, little sense of direction was coming from him, it seemed. The other owlets were chirping and hooting and hopping about. Masq easily moved through them, coming to stand before the great Leonidas. Then he stopped, and waited patiently. There was no sign of his previous ill thought at his ryb's calming motions, instead he looked almost happy to see him. But not quite. A murmur of assent rose in the wake of the Great Grey's speech after the reminder of food. Few owlets said they had not, but most had. Their gizzards were grinding with the bones and fur. Younger owlets were crying because they were scared. Others were ruffling their feathers to silence one another. And Masq, he just sat there listening. Search and Rescue was not something he cherished being placed in. Arctus had decided for him. A gust of wind buffeted the face of Masq as Leonidas assembled the owlets into a line. As he himself was guided into the larger group of owlets, he seemed to grow more powerful. This was his first session, and he vowed to do better than all the others. He would rise in the ranks. Deep in his gizzard he knew that. Leonidas gave out the orders of a role call, and oblivousness swept over Masq. No one had ever done that for anyone before. Let alone to him. Shaking his feathers, his voice carried out a hoot. "Present as well," then he tilted his head, and waited.
It was when the gaze of the ryb settled on himself, that he shivered slightly. No one had looked at him with such curiousity before either. There was something kindled in that Great Grey's eyes that represented the love of a father. Something Masq had never known. Masq looked up at him and blinked. One sudden, acknownleding motion that took control of him. He then looked about him, no excitement slithering through him like the nest maids that hold their food. No harm in announcing it, right? Masq let out a soft hoot, waiting for the signal for flight. He would fly ahead, unless Leonidas made him fly behind, catch anyone who fell behind. It was known to be fairly windy these times of day. It was hard to tell when the night was so.. unpredictable. Masq huffed and continued gazing off into he Silverveil, waiting for the chance to see it with his own eyes. There was bravery, a hope for making things right, and most of all. Of pure hope. His history was scattered, not one soul at the tree new of why he came. Except of course the owl who found him. She knew only a few facts more. Her warmth when she found him was supreme. He absolutely wished he could do the same to another young owlet in trouble. Just like he once had been. |

Tobias had been talking to some other owlets when Leonidas flew in. Tobias felt his gizzard drop simply because he had liked one of the female owlets he'd been talking to.
He got quiet and fluffed himself out to rid himself of his disappointment. He found that the feeling was replaced by excitement. He couldn't wait to prove himself as a great guardian. He wanted to prove himself above even his parents, who he wanted nothing more to be leveled above.
Tobias hopped over to the side of Lupinus as Leonidas filed them into a line. He hooted out when his name was called. "I'm present."
He seemed to be towering over most of the owlets and he wished he could shrink down a little more. In fact, he wished he was a different species. He felt his gizzard flip as his thoughts went again to the lesson they were going to learn.

She looked at Leonadas with a gleam of curiosity in her eyes. The barn owl had never been to Silverveil before. In Shellaina's life she had been to only two places. Her hollow in the Forest of Tyto, where she had been raised until she lept out onto the ground below, and the Great Tree, where the guardians had brought her after they found her on the ground.
Ever since Leonadas had told the Search and Rescue class they would be going to Silverveil, Shellaina had been wondering what it would be like, fidgiting with anticipation.
At the sound of her name, she replied. "Present." She just wanted start flying. She knew that they had to prepare before they could go but she couldn't help her lack of patience. It was just who she was. Even when she was still very young and unable to fly she had been inpatient of others.
She looked back to the Great Grey who was still calling names.
