Right off the bat, Kaken was born and has lived his life as an unusual bird. This would be due to his very noticeable black coloration. Kaken suffers from melanism, a genetic mutation that caused his plumage to range in black, brown, and gray hues. Instead of having the typical pure white feathers to line his face, angry black and brown splotches cover it. His wings are jet black and have a span of 30 inches,

History:
While some might not assume so, Kaken's black coloration has been a large source of grievance for the young owl. From the moment he was born, he was viewed as 'different', an outsider among even his own kind. Upon his arrival, his parents were astonished, even frightened that such a dark looking owlet had come from them. Had it not been for his mother's large heart and immense pity, his father would have simply dropped him on the ground outside their hollow and let the raccoons get him. Kaken's father wasted no time in repeating this idea to him as the little owlet grew up. Though Kaken was indeed allowed to live with his family, there were major rifts between his parents and himself. While his mother had indeed saved him, she was very on edge with the owlet, feeling uncomfortable around him. When Kaken's brothers hatched, she devoted her attention only to them and grew farther and farther apart from her first born. Kaken's father didn't even attempt to control his massive dislike for the owlet, openly criticizing him whenever possible and most often ignoring him completely. Just before daylight at times, Kaken would often hear his parents discussing how such a 'thing' had come from them. He was referred to as less than owl, something disgusting, sinister, malevolent.
