Early morning, the sun is shining. The sea is the image of tranquillity, yet trouble stirred like a hurricane in the Great Tree. Owls were frantically flying around, nest-maids everywhere - they were on red-alert. Nothing official had been said to these owls, but deep in their gizzards they could feel the approaching storm.
Last night, near first-light, a patrol of five had returned with just two owls. They were bloodied and hurt, but managed the journey back, and brought grave news. They had been flying in Tyto on a stealth mission to find out where the Remnants hideout was, but when they came across it, they were attacked. They had purposefully left two owls alive to take back a chilling message: Tell the noble King we are coming. In this thread, only the Rybs: Elhana, Pyry, Leonidas, Jehan, Streiter, the head-medic Astoll, and the forger Echo may post. ------------------------------- Hurrying out of his hollow, the tall Great-horned bidded his nestmaid Rose farewell, reminding her to get what he had asked her to get - his armour. Wasting no time, he dived down from his hollow at the top of the tree right down to the Parliament hollow. Landing heavily in the entrance, he rushed in. He was about to ask for his fellow members to be called, but they were already here. Straightening up as not to frighten them, Arctus made his way into the hollow, waiting until the door was closed and locked before speaking.
"My Parliament, I am afraid the reports are true - the Remnants are coming. We sent another patrol off almost straight after they returned, and the activity in Tyto has doubled. Their army is growing, but we are still with a great chance of success." He paused for a moment, feeling a sense of fear echo through the hollow. In the next few days... they could lose their home, their everything - but Arctus would never allow it. By every feather on his body, he would fight, and die by his name.
"We must prepare the tree and our army - no, our family - for the attack. It is believed they are heading through the beaks, as it is the only way to get through without skirting the coast, and we will have to intercept them. We must prevent the fight reaching the tree at all costs." Looking to his rybs, he knew he had the right owls with him. Clearing his throat, he hooted, "We need to form a war-cabinet." His eyes were downcast - how long had it been since he had last said those words?
"I will lead the owls into the battle. My life means nothing against that of the tree, and of the younger ones." He hooted bravely, then turned to his rybs. "Streiter, Leonidas, Pyry, Elhana. You will be in the main battle." Pausing, he looked over to the rest, thinking for a moment, "Jehan, I rely on you and Kall to prepare the owls that stay behind on defending the tree. We need snares, traps, just incase. You will also be intercepting any messengers we send back. Astoll, you too will be staying at the tree. You will be given a few helpers in the infirmary to deal with any injuries."
Hooting for the nestmaid in the hollow, she brought a scroll of parchment and two pin-like-shards in her mouth. Giving them to Arctus, he quickly stuck it on the wall. It was a map of the Southern Kingdoms. Picking up a long, pointed stick, he began to speak again.
"Here is the Tyto headquarters, finally marked thanks to the patrol last night. It is a castle, big enough to hold all of their army." He prodded the map in the western part of Tyto where a red dot was. "It is obvious they will go through the Beaks to reach us. This is where we will intercept them." He pointed to the middle of the beaks where there was a valley. "We will divide our owls up into three groups - one will be led by myself, the front. Leonidas, you will be with me. The second group will be smaller than the first - reinforcements. Streiter, Pyry, Elhana, you will lead this group. You will lie in wait further along the valley in-case of two scenarios: the Remnants getting through, or if we call upon you. The last group will be at the tree for worst-case."
Turning to face the Parliament for the last time, he put the stick down and then straightened up on his perch. He felt a lot more confident that this battle would be won now that he had a plan.
"The skill of ten of their owls matches one of ours. We are great, we are Guardians, and we will stop these menaces, like our forefathers. The road will be rough, but we can make it. There will be casualties, some of our number may not return from the battle, but neither will theirs." Glancing around the hollow with his warm amber gaze, he nodded to each of his owls. They had the upperhand - they were fine warriors, all capable of taking on the Remnants.
"Any questions?"

The tiny owl liked to think of herself as a calm-ish owl, though it was barely true. She had her moments when she lost her cool - her temper was feared by most of the younger owls. She was a firecracker; small Elhana was but she had a fiery temper. Today was the day to put the temper to use. She did not fear the Remnants. They were bigger than her but because someone was bigger than you didn't mean you had to fear her. A war was coming. A war that almost mirrored the war Soren had fought in.
The Little Owl hurried into the Parliament where she nodded ar the others. She listened to Arctus carefully. She would be fighting, though not with him. That was good. It wouldn't bode well if the Remnants saw their foes were a bunch of owls smaller than their heads. She sighed inwardly. The youngsters, though none had been told, would be terrified. It didn't take a genius to sense that all the rybs had been tense and scared. She looked over at Leonadis. He and the King would lead the strike. She was sure she knew who was going to go with them. Sindari, one of the Guardians of Search-and-Rescue and Battle, along with all of her chaw-mates, would go. They would be needed greatly. Echo would probably get some of the Colliering and Weather Interpretation trainees to keep her forge going in case they needed new armour. Astoll looked as steely as usual, his dull eyes staring at the King.
Elhana needed to be strong. She needed to brush the dust from her armour and use it in a fight for one of the first times in her life.

Pyry
Pyry was feeling a quiet calm sweep over her. Her nurse maid was bustling around looking for armor. Claresta had been hearing the rumors of a battle. Pyry felt her gizzard quiver and she looked out at the sky. The stars that had only just disappeared behind the light of the sun had caught Pyry off guard. She had seen a constellation that had her on edge. She felt the difference in the air of the great tree. Danger was coming, she could feel it and the stars seemed to have tried to tell her as much too.
Claresta was complaining about the state of the armor that had been made for Pyry. Pyry knew that Claresta knew next to nothing about armor but she didn't say so. "Claresta, I need to go to Parliament. We don't have time to argue about a smug of dust on the armor." Pyry and Claresta got her armor on. The armor felt unnatural but Pyry knew that she could fly with it on. She nodded at Claresta and went to the exit of her hollow. She spread her wings but didn't take off due to Claresta calling her.
Pyry turned to her nestmaid who was coiled up in the middle of the hollow. "Be safe." she hissed in the most gentle voice that Pyry had ever heard her use. Pyry nodded, not trusting her voice and spread her wings and flew to go to the Parliament.
When she arrived everyone except Arctus. She greeted the others quietly and waited for Arctus to come and tell them the plan.
When he appeared and went over the plans Pyry felt the unease settle in her. She hadn't fought in quite awhile. She hoped she was up to the task. Her position in the battle was as back-up for Arctus and Leonidas. She hoped that the back up wouldn't be needed and the battle would end in their favor with no casualties, but that wasn't practical.
"What about injured owls during the battle? How will we get them back here during the battle?" This question worried her more than anything else. She didn't want to leave any owl of theirs to die on that battle field.

Jehan did not order his nestmaid snake to ready his father's armor. It was displayed on the wall of his hollow as it always was. He didn't even have her dust it. As eager as he was, Jehan was not about to fly through the tree to the Parliament hollow in full battle regalia. If it was needed, the helmet and battle claws were there. But he knew that he wasn't going to be flying out into war soon, if it all. He told his snake, Esmie, instead to gather her friends, and then he hurried off to the Parliament, where most were gathered around, awaiting Arctus. Here, close to the roots, Jehan could practically feel the tree. It was alive, more alive than any other tree in all the kingdoms, and it had Ga'. Jehan knew that. And he also knew that it was ready to protect the owls. And Jehan was ready to protect the tree.
There was a split moment of fear in Jehan as he heard that the Remnants were preparing and coming for them, but then it hardened into readiness. They would be prepared, and he would make sure of that. He listened carefully to the plans, and was not at all surprised at his own task. "Jehan, I rely on you and Kall to prepare the owls that stay behind on defending the tree. We need snares, traps, just incase. You will also be intercepting any messengers we send back." He nodded, his squinting eyes sparking with duty. "We would defend the tree with our lives."
And then he watched the strategy come to life on the map, and Jehan's head seemed to be turning and whizzing, watching the war in his mind's eye. He had spent so long learning about battles, making strategies on his own. War ran through his blood. He stepped forward when it was over, turning to Arctus. "I will need nestmaid snakes from the weaving guild for the snares, my chaw will help them, and burrowing owls to dig supply caches," he announced. There was a slight stop, either for thinking or just catching his breath, before Jehan continued. "And the most sensitive nestmaid snakes - in terms of atmospheric pressure and all that, I mean - paired with owls as lookouts." Some other volunteers would be helpful, as well, but those were the necessities.
There was another pause, as he was thinking, and then Jehan clacked his beak. "Arctus, might I suggest something?" He picked up the stick at Arctus's feet and fluttered to the map.
"The Remnants sent two of ours back to give us a message, so they expect us to try and intercept them. And if they're expecting us, then we have to do something unexpected," Jehan explained, with a hard gleam in his eyes. "I suggest sending some of the reinforcements, a stealth team of strong, fast fliers, here," he said, pointing with the stick to where the sea narrowed inbetween the beach and the Beaks. He traced it down until the Forest of Tyto. "They can skirt the edge of the forest until they arrive here," he said, jabbing the map rather emphatically. "This is where I believe the Remnant's supply, reinforcement, and communication lines will be. I don't think they'd be stupid enough to send out all they have all at once - these are trained warriors and strategists. They might be vile and horrible, but they know war. The stealth group can cut off the Remnant army from their headquarters, giving our main army more of a chance at victory," he explained, with a few other pokes at the map with the stick for emphasis. A lot of the plan seemed to be based off of speculation, but there was no question that Jehan knew what he was talking about - he'd spent practically his whole life preparing for this. "And then, if necessary, the team can come and attack from behind," he said, sweeping the stick from the Forest of Tyto to the Barrens. He folded his wings with finality. He knew he couldn't go out and fight - his duty was at the tree - but it felt good to be somehow a part of the main action.
He bowed to Arctus, put the pointer back down, and settled back over at his perch. There was impatience in his wings - he needed this to hurry up, so he could deliver his orders to the snakes and owls. They had to get started as soon as possible. When similar preparations had been made so many years before, the Guardians had been allowed days to prepare the snares and other measures at the tree. Now, it seemed, they had merely hours.
